ABSTRACT
Currently, developed and developing societies rely heavily on coal, oil, and natural gas for their energy needs. Fossil fuels are nonrenewable, and it is an accepted reality by many that the current energy sources especially oil and gas, followed by coal will not last forever, are becoming too expensive or too environmentally damaging to retrieve, process and utilize. Increased levels of human activities and comfort induce increased dependence on external energy sources. Adverse environmental and health affects of fossil fuel usage and energy security problems result in having to use the current sources wisely and also create other clean and sustainable energy sources for today and tomorrow. |

MİM Conference Series 2007
Title: Social Impacts of Sensor Networks on Our Daily Lives
Speaker: Prof. İlhan. F. Akyıldız, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA
Time: April 20, 2007 at 6:00 PM
Place: Baruch College, 55 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY.
(At the corner of 24th Street. Room 5-160 at 5th floor)
Please contact Prof. Abdullah Tansel (+1 (646) 312-3366; abdullah_tansel@baruch.cuny.edu) and provide your names so that the security be informed to avoid problems at the entrance.
ABSTRACT
Recent advances in micro-electrical-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, wireless communications and digital electronics have enabled the development of low cost, low power multi-functional sensor devices that are small in size and communicate un-tethered in short distances. These tiny sensor devices, which consist of sensing, data processing and communicating components, leverage the idea of sensor networks based on collaborative effort of a large number of devices. In the future, sensor networks will play a major role and will become an integral part of our lives, more so than the present-day personal computers. In this talk, the architecture of sensor devices will be briefly explained, several interesting applications will be discussed. Moreover, next generation sensor networks’ applications in challenged environments such as underground and underwater will be presented and several challenges will be explained. Also the so-called wireless multimedia (data, audio, video, still image) sensor networks will be introduced, and their social impacts will be discussed in detail.
